On June 9, Sotheby’s London Evening Sale of Russian Art established 6 new artist records, 12 lots sell for over $1 million and 6 for over GBP1 000 000.

Joanna Vickery, Head of Sotheby’s Russian Art department in London thinks that the results of Evening Sale demonstrate that this market continues to mature. She commented: «It is clear that clients are looking for the highest quality works by Russian artists, such as seascape painter, Aivazovsky and Russia’s Impressionist artist, Korovin, whose works were hotly competed for this evening».

«Winter Landscape» by I. Aivazovsky was sold for GBP553 250 having exceeded the pre-sale estimate almost in seven times. Aivazovsky’s «Pushkin and Countess Raevskaya by the Sea Near Gurzuf and Partenit» was the highlight of the group, realizing GBP 1,833,250.

«Nature Morte aux Fruits», the Russian avant-garde masterpiece by Natalia Goncharova was the top lot. The painting made in 1914 was sold for GBP2 282 250. «Still Life with Red Flowers and Peaches», the second work by Goncharova in the sale, realized GBP 1,161,250 (estimate: GBP1 000 000–1 500 000). The still life, which is a major work from the early Russian avant-garde period, is believed to date from 1910 and is one of Goncharova’s first still lives in oil.

Works by the artist Zinaida Serebriakova broke the GBP1 000 000 mark (estimate: GBP150,000-200,000).

A group of four works by Russian Impressionist painter, Konstantin Korovin performed exceptionally well, with each work exceeding its pre-sale high estimate. The group was highlighted by the sale of the artist’s oil on canvas «View from the Terrace». Group of pictures was sold for GBP2 995 400 having exceeded the estimate in GBP900 000.

Further works which achieved high prices included Boris Kustodiev’s oil on canvas, «The Flower Harvest», which was sold for GBP1,026,850 (estimate: GBP600,000-800,000).
