A new world record for Irish painter Francis Bacon was set at Post-War and Contemporary Art Christie's auction in London on June 23. The artist and George Dyer were together until 1971, when Dyer committed suicide on the eve of Bacon's major retrospective at the Grand Palais in Paris.
Other highlights of the sales were Lucian Freud's «Bella», a nude portrait of the artist's daughter, fashion designer Bella Freud, which brought GBP1.8m, Andy Warhol's 1981 portrait of Joseph Beuys, sold for nearly GBP1.7m and Jean Michel Basquiat's «Untitled», sold for GBP1m. The total value of the 57 lots sold was GBP24.4m.
