Australian aboriginal art Sotheby’s auction in Melbourne brought $3.6 million. Two works by Central Desert artist, the late Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri have sold at auction in Melbourne for nearly triple the highest amount previously paid for his work. «Emu Corroboree Man» and «Man's Love Story», each fetched $411,750 at Monday night's auction, way above the upper estimate limit of $250,000 and $70,000 respectively. Clifford is said to be the most famous Aboriginal artists in Australia; «Emu Corroboree Man» is his very first painting for a movement called «Papunya Tula».
Works by a pair of artists from Western Australia's Kimberley region also realized high prices. «Purnululu» by Jack Britten was sold for $84,000, and a «Rain Cloud», by Rover Thomas made $329,000.
Aboriginal art is very popular among collectors worldwide. Next aboriginal art auction will be held by Christie’s in Melbourne on August 30.
