Amsterdam Auctioneers Glerum launches the second auction season of 2007 with a large collection of art on paper, including silkscreen prints, colour etchings, gouaches, drawings and mixed techniques by both national and international artists.

Once again the auction features works by artists like Pierre Alechinsky (Brussels 1927), Karel Appel, Corneille, Bram Bogart, Bram van Velde, Pol Bury, Max Ernst, Lucebert, Arman and Zadkine.

Also going under the hammer this time are works by Dutch artists, among whom are Hans Vredegoor, Anton Martineau, Piet Warffemius, Darja Vos, Frits Kloppers, Edith Cammenga, Leo van Vugt, Henk Visch, Carel Visser and Anton Vrede.

Among the colourful and exciting works on paper, those by Hans Vredegoor confront the viewer with contrasts like chance and control, illusion and reality, order and chaos, movement and non-movement. They may be abstract compositions but devotees of figuration will also find these works interesting. Those who loose themselves in his work increasingly discover more figures and subject matter.

Bert Vredegoor, also born in Deventer, has a completely different style. While you can also loose yourself in this work and the artist leaves what is represented to the spectator▓s imagination, his quest is to capture light and darkness. This gives the work its meditative and extraordinary character.

The Dutch artist Anton Vrede, who was born in Curacao and moved to Leiden in his early teens, paints highly expressive animals in quick strokes. His clumsy penguin, capricious hare or ungainly elephant are all images in which we recognize something of ourselves. His animal world is thus an apt caricature of the human one.

Also on sale are a small number of flamboyant, spontaneous and whimsical drawings of women by Anton Martineau. The expressionist work of this Amsterdam artist has contributed significantly to new international figuration. Very early on, he developed a close friendship with the well-known Dutch artist Jan Sierhuis. He has exhibited in Paris with Antonio Saura, and among the recurring themes in his work are women, erotic couples and the tango.

Foreign artists in the auction are represented by Christopher Knowles, Wilfredo Lam, Friederich Schreder-Sonnenstern, A.R. Penck, Romain Suzzoni, Zao Wou-Ki, Joseph Beuys and Kumi Suga©.
