ITALIAN VIOLINS WILL BE SOLD BY AUCTION ON ENGLISH LAND

On March 11, Sotheby?s auction house will hold the sales named «Musical Instruments» in London New Bond Street. The auction will represent old violins, cellos, bows and accessories. Most part of the displayed lots is violins of the 17th – 20th centuries.
The central lot of future sales is expected to be the instrument by Giovanni Francesco Pressenda (1777–1854). The violin made in 1834 in Turin is marked with a notice «Joannes Franciscus Pressenda q. Raphael fecit Taurini anno Domini 1834». It is estimated at GBP110 000–150 000.
The instrument by óarlo Bergonzi II who lived at the turn of the 18th – 19th centuries is estimated at GBP80 000–120 000. The violin varnished in yellow-brown was made in 1780.
Bow instrument made by Carlo Tononi, Bologna born is of the same estimate. Craftsman was born in 1675 and lived in Venice most of his life where he created his instrument in the period of 1715 – 1720 which will be represented to the auctioneers.
The next lot is of the same master. The instrument varnished in brown at 35,5 length is estimated at GBP50 000–70 000. The lot is marked with «Carlo Tononi Bolognese Fece in Venezia l?A: 1725» notice.
Among the highlights is cello by Giovanni Battista Ceruti (1756–1817) made in 1790. The lot is estimated at GBP40 000–60 000.
Brechia was the only town where craftsmen could compete with the representatives of Cremona school of bow instruments. The auction will represent a violin by Pietro Giacomo Rogeri (1675–1735), Brechia born. The instrument varnished in light brown was made in 1720. The lot is estimated at GBP35 000–50 000.
Amati, family of outstanding craftsmen of bow instruments is represented with works by Antonio and Girolamo Amati, sons of Andrea Amati who was the founder of famous Cremona dynasty. Violin of their work made in 1618 is estimated at GBP35 000–50 000. Head of the instrument is created by Andrea Guarneri, the representative of another celebrated family of Cremona bow instruments craftsmen. Another instrument made by Alessandro Gagliano, a pupil of great Antonio Stradivari is estimated at GBP30 000–50 000.
