On June 5-6, two auctions of modern art of Ketterer Kunst devoted to the image of women took place in Munich.

«Girl with a Blue Scarf» by Charles Schmidt-Rotluff made in 1909 is one of them. Water colour drawing sold for ˆ360 000 became a record as work on paper by this artist. The artist experimented in a field of water colour technique in the course of 1909. This picture is the most successful work by the painter in this sphere. Wide dabs and sharp contrast of colours create a feeling of freshness and spontaneous contact with a spectator. This picture is a unique exception in Schmidt-Rotluff work as in 1911 the artist had already left the water colour technique and began to work on forms, developing pure geometrical idiom.

Slight eroticism is in the following picture - «Caryatid» by Amadeo Modigliani. The lot was sold for ˆ425 000 having exceeded the estimate in four times.

The picture «Portrait of the Woman with Red Hair» by Emil Nolde depicting the lady with red lips and red hair became the third top lot. Water colour portrait was sold by auction for ˆ210 000. One of the collectors paid a bit lower price for another picture by the same artist – «Sea (the Evening Sky)».

Some German publishing house purchased one more image of a female figure. It is «Woman as the Model of Scales and Measure» by Albert Oehlen. This canvas of big format was bought for ˆ96 000.

The auction represented not only pictorial images of women but also sculptural works. Among them is wooden sculpture «the Model» by Stefan Balkingol sold by auction for ˆ72 000. Among creations of more famous artists is the tiny sculptural image of an elephant of Salvador Dali (estimate: ˆ14 000). It was not sold. Another picture depicting woman «Expectation» by Pablo Picasso was not sold also (estimate: $10 000). It is one of works from a series of pictures made by the artist to his 85th anniversary.
