A landmark international exhibition at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery’s (BM&AG), «Love Revealed» marks the centenary of the remarkable Victorian painter Simeon Solomon (1840-1905).

Solomon was one of the later Pre-Raphaelite group of young artists who gathered around Dante Gabriel Rossetti in London in the 1860s and 70s. As a young man, he enjoyed success and critical acclaim: he was regularly hailed as a genius, and his friend Edward Burne-Jones called him «the greatest artist of us all». However, when Solomon was only 32 his homosexuality became public knowledge and his career was effectively destroyed. He spent the last years of his life in an East End workhouse, destitute and half-forgotten yet still producing drawings and watercolours charged with mystical and visionary intensity.

This major exhibition – the first full-scale survey of Solomon’s career in a hundred years – offers a chance to rediscover the life and work of an extraordinary outsider of British art. It brings together over 150 paintings, drawings, watercolours and photographs from public and private collections in the UK, the US and Canada, including works not seen in public since Solomon’s own lifetime. The exhibition presents works from all periods of the artist’s career, including early Old Testament and Jewish subjects as well as the intensely personal, visionary chalk drawings that typify his later work. «Love Revealed» also reassesses Solomon’s place in XIX century art, displaying his work alongside paintings, watercolours and drawings by friends and contemporaries including Rossetti, Burne-Jones and Khnopff.
