The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg opened an exhibition «Masterpieces from world museums» on November 3. The important show features a legendary painting «Athena Pallas» by a great Dutch artist Rembrandt.
Though the canvas now belongs to Museu Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, earlier (from late XVIII century up to 1930) it was displayed at a Hermitage gallery. A Portuguese oil kiloton Calouste Gulbenkian purchased the masterpiece from the Soviet government in 1930.
At that time «Athena Pallas» was taken to Paris through the Berlin’s customs in authentic gilded frame. It is notable that the painting is displayed to visitors to the present Hermitage exhibition «Masterpieces from world museums» in the same framework.
