Yesterday, on November 28, the world leading auction houses started the so called «Russian weeks». Special sales dedicated to works by renowned Russian artists will be held by Sotheby’s, Christie’s, Bonhams, MacDougall’s, French auction house Tajan and Scandinavian Stockholms Auktionsverk.

MacDougall’s opened its Russian auction at 11.00 on November 28. The sale featured paintings, sculptures, silver, porcelain and many other art pieces. List of artists comprised Larionov, Platonov, Zverev, Malyavin, Konchalovsky, Benoit and Chagall.

Bonhams’ collection of Russian art (paintings of XVIII–XIX centuries) included works by Ivan Aivasovsky, Petr Sokolov, Harlamov, Makovsky and others.

Sotheby’s Olympia will launch its Russian Sales on November 29. This day buyers from all over the world will be able to bid for important Russian paintings, applied art and icons. Among featured artists are Malyavin, Benoit, Aivazovsky and Korovin. Avant-garde is represented by Malevich, Annenkov and Larionov.

The second part of the Sotheby’s auction will take place at New Bond Street on December 1. This section will feature a comprehensive collection of landscapes and seascapes by Aivazovsky and Shishkin, battle scenes by Vereschagin and Albrecht Adam, genre paintings, etc.

Christie’s will offer its Russian selection at King Street on November 30. Reportedly, among highlights of the auction’s first session (10.00 am) will be a canvas «Marsh at evening» by Isaac Levitan. The important painting is estimated to fetch GBP1,000,000–1,500,000.

The final session is to be held at 14.30 pm. Its highlights include porcelain services once owned by count Orlov and Grand Duke Konstantin, medals, orders and coins, old icons and weaponry, etc.

Despite differences in contents, quality and prices of auctioned Russian collections at MacDougall’s, Bonhams, Christie’s and Sotheby’s, they are united by several general tendencies. For instance, each collection will feature Russian vases. It is notable that two painted porcelain palace vases (1825, height 137 cm, estimate $500,000–800,000) were sold in April at Sotheby’s New York for staggering $3,936,000.

London auction marathon presents palace vases as well. Sotheby’s will offer paired vases dating the time of Nicolas I (1840, height 93 cm) form the State Hermitage’s collection. Paintings in the vases copy landscapes by I. Reisdall. The rare art pieces belonged to prince Alexander of Hessen (brother-in-law of Russian Emperor Alexander II). The lot is expected to realize from GBP600,000 to GBP800,000.

Two 1840 «crater» type vases (height 95 cm) at Christie’s are estimated at much more impressive GBP1,500,000–2,000,000. «Landscape with peasants and donkeys» by Willem de Heis, pupil of a Dutch painter Jan Both is depicted in one of them. The unique vases belonged to Catherine’s II secretary Alexander Bezborodko. Later, during the reign of Paul I Bezborodko became the State Chancellor.

Paintings by Ivan Aivazovsky are among the most popular lots in each of the auctioned Russian collections. Traditionally, works by the renowned artist are extremely desirable in the art and antiques market. Christie’s puts up for sale a canvas «A Fishing boat with a Russian merchant brig at anchor» (1871, estimate GBP800,000–1,200,000), Sotheby’s – «Ararat mountain» (1869, estimate GBP450,000–650,000), Bonhams – «Calm evening sea» (1884, estimate GBP150,000–200,000), while MacDougall’s offers a small painting «A ship in a storm» (1870, estimate GBP20,000–30,000).

I. Shishkin. In the woods. 1889. Oil on canvas. 100,0 È 74,0 cm. Estimate GBP250,000–350,000. Russian Sales. Bonhams, London. November 28

This year auction houses have managed to acquire really important and comprehensive collections of Russian art. Sotheby’s continue to collaborate with a renowned director Andrei Konchalovsky, who presented three paintings by his famous grandfather Petr Konchalovsky. Konchalovsky’s canvas «A red-haired nude in front of a mirror» (1928) is estimated at GBP220,000–280,000. Christie’s sells eleven paintings by Maria Yakunchikova from the collection of the artist’s granddaughter Irina Veber. The top-lot of the selection «View from a window of an old house in Vvedenskoje» will possibly make between GBP150,000 and GBP200,000. MacDougall’s sale features a collection of an artist Fedor Kozlov. The star of the collection, which includes paintings, graphic art, photographs and documents, is a canvas «Ballet-dancer in green clothing» (estimate GBP80,000–120,000).

Moscow-based auction house «Gelos» will hold an interesting on-line auction «Moscow–London–Kiev» on December 3. By now 112 bids has been made. The most interesting lots at the «Gelos» auction will probably be two rare and unique books (published in 1739 and in 1881–1901), seven decorative porcelain plates (made at the Imperial porcelain factory in 1827–1828) and a harquebus dated the late XVII–early XVIII centuries.

You may order a catalogue from any of the mentioned auctions on the official site of the «Russian Antique» Company.
