Former Dire Straits bass guitarist John Illsley is making his name as a painter. Illsley played bass guitar for the popular rock band from the 1970s until the early 1990s. Now he paints full time and has brought the best of his work from the past two years to Australia, the country where he was prompted to change his career. In 1983 Illsley visited artist Brett Whiteley's Sydney studio. That visit encouraged him to continue his efforts in painting. When the musician had a break from the Dire Straits, he started drawing and painting.

The show features a collection of abstracts, in which many were inspired by water, both by Illsey▓s seaside home in Hampshire and Sydney Harbour. More recent works are female nudes. This is his fifth solo exhibition. John Illsey says that his future is with the brush rather than the guitar.
