A number of world records were set at international art auctions last month. Although we have been accustomed to stunning success of Picasso’s paintings with collectors, the price $96,000,000 paid for the portrait of Dora Maar caused a sensation at the art and antique market.
Results of the New York «Russian week» held simultaneously by the two major auction houses Christie’s and Sotheby’s, impressed experts and connoisseurs of art as well. The hammer prices for some masterpieces by renowned Russian artists several times exceeded pre-sale estimates.
Constantly growing prices on Russian art — is it a tendency or a temporary fashion? Today many Russian collectors and businessmen purchase important artworks by the national artists at the world auctions. Is it a true passion for art, demonstration of patriotism or primarily a profitable investment? Results of the next auction seasons will show the truth.
Unfortunately, passion for the national history proves to be a very expensive hobby. For instance, now there are only three restored Russian planes in running order in our country, while many old aircrafts owned by foreign collectors regularly take part in various aeroshows worldwide. Read an article dedicated to collecting of rare airplanes in Russia in this issue of our magazine.
At the same time, it has become a good tradition to organize rallies of antique automobiles in Moscow. «Antiq.Info» will inform readers about coming motor runs that will take place this summer.
