Annual Antique Fairs became an integral part of cultural life of the Russian capital long ago. XXI Antique Fair, which took place in Moscow in late September, demonstrated that national collectors as well as foreign art dealers displayed increased interest in Russian art. Organizers of the event noted that this year participants of the show offered visitors extremely comprehensive and well-designed exhibitions. Many art galleries displayed subject stands dedicated to a single artist.
However, a report made by the Deputy Director of the Federal Culture and Mass Media Supervision Agency Anatoliy Vilkov set the peaceful atmosphere of the Fair on fire. Now, the specialists of the state museums have no right to conduct authenticity expertise of art pieces belonging to private collectors.
The decision will adversely affect antique dealers as their clients as a rule demand expert opinions by museum specialists. Antique traders used to trust experts of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Hermitage or the Igor Grabar National Research and Restoration Center.
The ban affects art experts too, because even if they wish, they will fail to conduct private practice, as the Federal Supervision Agency has not passed the corresponding regulation yet.
