Exhibition of military antiques at Manezh
Representatives of the organizers of “Archaic Times–2007” Alexander Yatskevich (the Head of the Display Projects of “Kordon” Company), Darya Zinovieva (Director of antique shop “Art-Antique”) and Igor Lavruk (General Director of Russian specialized numismatic firm “Coins and Medals”) told “Antiq.Info” about the goals and program of the coming display. — Why have you chosen exhibition hall “Manezh” as a display site for the project? Alexander Yatskevich: The history of “Manezh” is closely connected with war theme as it was erected to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the victory in 1812 Napoleonic War and was meant for military parades and displays of troops. Nowadays, “Manezh” regularly hosts various exhibitions, fairs and biennales. Besides, it is one of the favorite sites of Moscow residents. At the exhibition, we are going to combine different branches of collecting: military antiques, numismatics, faleristics, philately, deltiology, etc. That will surely attract a lot of collectors, experts as well as the wide public. — What items will be featured in the military antiques sections? Alexander Yatskevich: The display will be devoted to the history of military uniform, history of medicine including battlefield medicine, means of communication, field kitchen, and military-related documents and books. Memorial items, paintings, engravings and prints will be featured too. — Will large-sized machines of war be present at the display? Darya Zinovieva: Of course, it is almost impossible to take a heavy tank or an airplane to the downtown of Moscow. However, visitors to the event will be able to see smaller pieces — motorcycles, for instance. Heavier vehicles will be listed in subject catalogues. — It is quite unusual to unite military and numismatic subjects within the frames of one display, is not it? Igor Lavruk: Organizers of the event decided not to mix the showcases: “Archaic Times–2007” and Numismatic conference will be held in different halls. We believe that the first specialized numismatic forum will attract numerous collectors and numismatists, as it is an upcoming trend nowadays. Speaking about the profits and popularity, numismatic auctions can be easily compared with important sales of paintings and other artworks. — What companies and displays are the potential rivals of “Archaic Times–2007”? — Of course, the competition is quite high in this field. Still, we prefer the word “friends” rather than “rivals”. — What can you say about the agenda of the coming display? Alexander Yatskevich: I think that it is too early to unveil the full schedule. We are planning to hold a fashion-show of military uniform, several seminars and master classes available both for participants and for visitors. — Whom would you like to invite to the display? Alexander Yatskevich: We are glad to invite as much participants as possible! Many leading art and antique companies have already agreed to take part in the exhibition. We hope that foreign firms, noncommercial institutions, children’s numismatic clubs and others will be at the show as well. — What are the prospects of “Archaic Times–2007”? Igor Lavruk: I am sure that the project is highly attractive for numismatists. I think it should be held annually. Darya Zinovieva: It is a good idea to hold annual exhibitions. Indeed, the contemporary antiquarian market greatly lacks specialized exhibitions and projects. We believe that our initiative will lead the way to the others. |
