Brands and stamps of Russian and Soviet ceramics

Leonid Matveev, the research associate of the department of ceramics of the State Russian museum (St. Petersburg), has begun a series of articles about marks and signs on pottery of the USSR and Russia in the issue No 14 of our magazine. Today we continue our conversation on this theme.

INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION «BELKHUDOZHCERAMICA»
Paper sticker with a brand in the form of a styled flame or a bird’s wing and an inscription «RADASHKOVICHI». It is depicted on a majolica plate for herring (28.5 È 8.3 È 4.0 cm.). Dates of 2005–2006.
In 1979 the industrial association «Belkhudozhceramica» was founded. It included Ivenetskaya Factory of Art Ceramics and factories in Bobruisk, Rechitsi and Radashkovochi. A factory in the town of Radashkovichi (45 km from Minsk) was the center of the new association. The most probably ceramics had been already made there before 1979 as it is known that since 1974 the painter-ceramist á.í. Poddubnii worked in Radashkovochi. Nowadays the factory in Radashkovochi produces different majolica dishes and flowerpots.

BUDYANSKIY FAIENCE FACTORY «SICKLE AND HAMMER»
Green overglaze brand — an inscription «Budi» breaking a cirle wirh vegetal dÊcor. Additional stamp — an inscription «3 sort» (Russian: the third rate) and a digit «36» (in a rectangular). They are depicted on the porcelain bowl (height 5.3 Óm., diameter 18.0 cm.). Dates of 1950-ies. The brand was published in the reference book without characteristics and dates of 1950-ies (Dulkina 2003. p. 341) or 1957–1960 (Dudenko, Nikiforenko 2000. p. 771).

I. KUZNETSOV’S FACTORY NEAR VOLKHOV
Red overglaze stamped brand — an eight¬point star and inscriptions «I E Kuznetsova», «ÎÁ — ×ÏÌÈÏ×Å —» (bow-shaped). It is depicted on a porcelain cup (9.7 È 7.8 È 6.7 cm.). Dates of 1878–1917. A similar brand is known, it does not have decor in the eight-point star and additional hyphens near the inscription «ÎÁ — ×ÏÌÈÏ×Å —» (Matseevskii 1922. p. 23 (198); Saltykov 1962. p. 481 (261); Karjakina 1998. p. 78; Dudenko, Nikiforenko 2000. p. 773; Selivanov 2002. p. 399; Dulkina 2003. p. 198).

Underglaze stamped brand in paste — an Imperial crown with cartouche with indecipherable picture and an inscription «KUZ+». Digits — «25», «7». It is depicted on a flat porcelain plate (diameter 20.8 cm.). Dates of the end of the XIX — beginning of the XX century. Similar marks are known — they were put on the factory’s items in 1878–1917 (Dulkina 2003. p. 199, 736–737).

GRUZINO PORCELAIN¬FAIENCE FACTORY «RED PORCELAIN MAKER»
Light green overglaze stamped brand — an image of styled vase in furnace that at the same time is the letter «F» in the world «Glavfarforfiaence». Below — inscriptions «NKMP RSFSR» (in cartouche), «red porcelain maker», «g. Chudovo» (town of Chudovo) and «O — 1». It is depicted on the porcelain teapot (13.0 È 18.2 È 9.9 cm.). Dates of 1935–1946.

The brand is analogous, it differs only in colour (dark green) and some details. It is depicted on a flat porcelain plate (diameter 25.0 cm.). Dates of 1935–1946.

DULEVSKY PORCELAIN FACTORY NAMED ARTER THE PRAVDA NEWSPAPER
Green overglaze stamped brand — a shield with a monogram «NKLP» (abbreviation for People’s Commissariat of Light Industry). There are a star and an inscription «RSFSR» above the shield. There are inscriptions: «Farfor z-d» (Russian: Porcelain Factory) (bow-shaped), «DULEVO» and «Sort 3» (Russian: the third rate) under the shield. It is depicted on a flat porcelain plate (diameter 24.0 cm.). Dates of 1930–1940-ies. Similar brands are known without inscriptions that indicate the grade of quality of an item and were put by a rubber stamp in 1937–1946. (Dulkina 2003. p. 364; Andreeva 1995. p. 94.; Sametskaya 2004. p. 475). The analogous red brand was put on items of the B grade (Refer to: L. Matveev. Native ceramics. Information on brands and signs // Antiq.Info, November 2004, 22. p. 76).

KOROSTENSKII PORCELAIN FACTORY
Green overglaze stamped brand — a shield with a monogram «FK» and inscriptions «farfor» (Russian: porcelain), «korostenskii» and «2s» (Russian: B grade).
There is a digit «12» below. It is depicted on a porcelain salad-dish (32.2 È 21.4 È 5.4 cm.). Dates of the end of the 1990-ies.

LENINGRAD FACTORY “ELECTRITIAN”
Relief underglaze stamped brand — the letter «ü» (Russian: E) with a lightning.

Relief stamped brand (analogous but of the less diameter and in a circle). Brands 27–28 are depicted on a porcelain screw-in fuse socket (6.5 È 3.5 È 3.8 cm.). Dates of 1930–1950-ies.
The exact time of the foundation of Leningrad factory «Electrician» is not known (probably, 1920–1930-ies). In 1990-ies (?) the factory was transformed in the JSC «Factory «Electrician»» (Medikov pr., 10).
Nowadays the enterprise produces a-c welding machines and rectifiers, welding sets and cooking appliances.

LOMONOSOV LENINGRAD PORCELAIN FACTORY
Black underglaze stamped brand — a monogram «LFZ» (Russian: abbreviation for the name of the factory) in a circle. It is depicted on a porcelain bowl (2.6 È 2.0 cm.). Dates of 1930–1940-ies. It is indicated that the brand dated of the end of 1930-ies — the beginning of 1940¬ies, it was put by stamp on biscuit, it was usually green and could be seen on sculpture (Nosovich, Popova 2005. p. 666).

Brown overglaze stamped brand — an inscription «Undergrade product» in a rectangular. It is depicted on a decanter of a wine set «Grapes». (form of S.E. Yakovleva; height 22.5 cm.). Dates of: 1940–1941.

Blue stamped brand on biscuit — the letter «D». In the paste by hand — «SP» (shaper’s initials). It is depicted on a porcelain sculpture «Fox and Beaver» made to the sketch of B.(I.)Y. Vorobyev (1949, height 12.2 cm.) on the plot of S.V. Mikhalkov’s fable of the same name. The letter «D» could be often seen on Lomonosov factory porcelain of the 1930–1940-ies. In particular, it is known that this letter was put by E.A. Danko on her works (Dulkina 2003. p.379). But E.A. Danko has nothing in common with the statuette.

Blue overglaze stamped brand — a monogram «LFZ». Red stamp — 3 sort (Russian: third rate). It is depicted on a porcelain bread and butter plate (diameter 15.0 cm.). Dates of 1950–1970-ies. As Dulkina indicates (Dulkina 2003. p. 354) that the colour of such brands on LFZ items was defined by the grade of quality (red for the first quality, blue — for B grade and green for third rate). However the published brand with an additional stamp testifies exceptions of the rule. The given brand made by A.A. Yatskevich was put on the factory’s items since 1936 with underglaze or overglaze stamp, rarely — by hand.

MINSK PORCELAIN-FAIENCE FACTORY
Blue underglaze stamped brand — inscriptions «Íí(?)» and «TP BSSR» with a star, «FARFORO-FAIENC+» (on a bow-shaped band, maybe «farforo-faience» (Russian: porcelain-faience)), «z-d» (Russian: factory) and «MINSK». It is depicted on the porcelain sculpture «A sitting dove» (9.0 È 3.0 È 10.8 cm.). Dates of 1950-ies (On March 15, 1951 Minsk tiled factory was renamed to porcelain-faience. Since 1961 it is making only porcelain.).

MSTINSKII RPK
Relief underglaze stamped brand — an inscription «Mstinskii (bow-shaped) R.P.ë.». It is depicted on a porcelain electrical outlet receptable (height 1.7 cm., diameter 5.6 cm.). Dates of 1930–1960-ies.

Relief underglaze stamped brand — a monogram «Mpk». It is depicted on a porcelain electrical outlet receptable (height 1.5 cm., diameter 5.8 cm.). Dates of 1930–1960-ies.
Data on the factory was not found.

«POLYTECHNIC» FACTORY
Relief stamped brand in paste — inscriptions «POLYTECHNIC» (in a curved oval) and «LGR» (Leningrad?) (in a circle). It is depicted on a porcelain switch (height 2,5 cm., diameter 5,6 cm.). Dates of 1930–1960-ies.
Data on the factory was not found

RAKKOLANJOKI CERAMIC FACTORY (RAKKOLANJOEN KAAKKELITEHDAS OY)
Relief stamped in paste — an inscription «RAKKOLANJOKI» and a digit «42» with two dots on the edges in a frame shaped in a complicated way. It is depicted on the tile (42.5 È 23.5 È 4.5 cm.; with a box to fix a tile). Dates of the 1900-ies.
The factory was founded by baron Nicolai in 1877 near the place of Rakkolanjoki, in Vyborg province of the Great Principality of Finland (the other names of the place are Rokkolanjoki, Rakkolanyoki; the most probably it is the estate Rokkala in the river Rakkolanjoki where Jacob Lund founded a glass factory in 1772. Nowadays it is the village Sovetskii, Leningradskaya oblast.). The factory produced potters and faience items and tiles. The data of 1887 shows that the factory produced goods for a total sum of 146 000 markkas.
The factory was one of the suppliers of the stove majolica for Saint-Petersburg. For example, it was Rakkolanjoki factory and M.B. Kharlamov ceramic workshop that made tiles and pottery for the building of the Russian Foreign Trade Bank (architect V.A. Shreter, 1887–1888; í. Morskaya str., 32). Some tiles of Rakkolanjoki factory are presented in the collection of the SHM of SPb. The exact date of the factory shutdown is not known. It could exist till the beginning of the Soviet-Finnish war of 1939–1940 and the following affiliation of the territory to the USSR. (Selivanov 2002. p. 268.; SHM SPb. 2003. p. 12–13.; Balashov 2003. P. 128–139).

BROTHERS AKSENOVS’ FACTORY
Grey underglaze stamped brand — an inscription «FABRICA B. AKSENOVIKH» (Russian: B. AKSENOV’s FACTORY) in a figurine ornament. It is depicted on a porcelain cup (13.0 È 11.1). Dates of 1853–1881. A similar brand is known, it was underglazed in blue and green colours or overgalzed in red (Petrov 1904. p.II.; Matseevskii1922. p. 9( 36).; Saltykov 1962. p. 410, 472 ( 41).; Popov 1980. p. 279 ( 2).; Andreeva 1995. p. 91; Karjakina 1998. p. 8.; Selivanov 2002. p. 30, 387.; Dulkina 2003. p. 14). It is published without characteristics in some reference-books (Trotsky, Fogt 1999. p. 188.; Dudenko, Nikiforenko 2000. p. 702).
The factory was founded in 1853 ÇÏÄÕ in the village of Bakhteevo of Bronnitskii district, Moscow province by three peasants-brothers Aksenov: Vladimir Afanasyevich, Grigorii Afanasyevich and Ivan Afanasyevich. In 1860-ies V.F. Musakov’s factory situated in the same village was joined to their factory. In 1876 the factory’s owner was Vladimir Afanasyevich Aksenov. The manufacture produced items for the total sum of 75 000 rubles while there were only 104 employees. Later the factory was inherited by V.A. Aksenov’s children: Terentii, Afanasii, Jakob and Ivan. In 1881 it was shutdown. The factory produced porcelain and faience items of low quality with underglaze or polychrome overglaze painting with gilding and elements of the second rococo.

STATE UNITARY ENTERPRISE «SHEKMA — GZHEL» (SHEVLYAGINSKII FACTORY OF SPECIAL CERAMICS)
Black stamped brand on biscuit — inscriptions «SHEKMA» and «GZHEL» in an oval. It is depicted on the porcelain statuette with cobalt painting “A sitting dog” (7.5 È 5.6 È 6.7 mm.). Dates of 2004–2005.
The first reference to ceramic works in the village of Shevlyagino, located near Moscow dates back to 1876. In the beginning of 1930¬ies there was an industrial artel on porcelain production with underglaze cobalt hand painting. The State Unitary Enterprise «Shekma — Gzhel» (Moskovskaya Oblast, Ramenskii district, Novo-Kharitonovo, v. Shevlyagino) was probably organized in the 1990-ies and in 1995 the factory got the status of «The Russian homecraft». Nowadays tea and coffee services, vases, watches, chandeliers, lamps, souvenirs etc. are produced here in small number of copies. In 1995–2003 A.V. Grinko worked as a painter-modeler at Shevlyaginskii factory and since 1990-ies the master-ceramist V.I. Borunov has been working there as a modeler.
