Forged valuables

Today the problem of forged works of art is a burning issue at the art and antiquarian market worldwide. In 2006 in Germany, the turnover of officially claimed fakes made two and a half billions of euros. The situation is nearly the same in many other countries nowadays: numerous fakers, greedy for gain, are hammering out «masterpieces» that naÐve and inexperienced collectors are eagerly buying.

What is the situation with forgery in the Russian federation? In order to get an answer to this question we addressed Denis Lukashin, the Genral Director of the group of companies «Art Consulting».

— Denis, what can you tell us about the situation with forgery at the Russian art and antiquarian market?
— Well, nothing has changed during recent years: faked works of art quite often are sold at auctions now. First of all it refers to Russian painting of the late XIXth–early XXth century. Notably, the quality of such fakes is rather poor. However, the quantity of forged works relating to the so-called Silver Age and Russian avant-garde has started to decrease.
There are many problems today, but it seems that the situation starts to improve, as the art market becomes more «transparent». With establishment of independent expert institutions (consisting of experienced professional teams), anyone has an opportunity to receive information about certain artworks.

— What is your opinion about the sale of Rostropovich-Vishnevskaya?
— This unique collection must be displayed at Russian art museums. Moreover, I think that the collection should be distributed between several national museums including the regional ones. However, it is up to the present owner of the Rostropovich-Vishnevskaya collection.

— Can expertise influence development of the art market?
— Professional expertise is the core element of the antiquarian market; it grants the openness of the market and stimulates demand. Modern methods of expertise can provide exact information about an art pieces, its authenticity, provenance, condition, etc. The so-called express-expertise is very popular today, as it is the fastest and relatively inexpensive way to learn something about an artwork.

— What is the role of expertise of artworks now?
— Today the services connected with expertise of artworks are very widespread. Almost everyone who sells, buys, insures or transports a works of art needs the services of an expert. Usually, it is the customer who provides data about a piece, and an expert makes a conclusion on the basis of the information presented. Art Consulting has a large database concerning evaluation of art and antiquarian pieces. For more than four years we have been expanding this data. Art Consulting is the first company in Russia dealing evaluation and expertise of works of art. We are trusted by many international insurance companies and financial institutions.

— What is an author’s certification, and why is it important?
— It is the effective way to cope with falsifications and forgery, when original art pieces are substituted by high-quality copies. Not only works by masters of the past should be protected by authenticity certificated; it is the issue of the day for contemporary artists as well. Certificate states condition of an artwork before it is coming for sale, restoration, expertise, etc.
Certificate is needed to identify an art piece during various juridical contests. Identifying characteristics of an art piece are included in the database of Art Consulting. Besides, a certificate «follows» an art piece stating its authenticity and quality.
