Antiq.Info #24/25 (January/February 2005)

With the March coming closer art dealers become more active. We wondered if there is a parallel between Russian and foreign antique markets and we found out that we can compare these markets. The article by Sergey Golubev is about duel of two auction giants - Christie’s and Sotheby’s in New York.

Arina Burikina and Nataly Gilgevitch write about Icons Exhibition from Private Collections that was held in Museum of Andrey Rublev. The material covers the history of unique objects presented by Moscow collectors.

The hunter subject has always been more popular among art collectors than among artists themselves. Tsars, princes, noblemen and roturiers were fascinated with hunter. The demand for the objects of art of this genre was great but there were not much items of this kind. Our constant author Victor Muzyka devoted his current material to the topic of hunter in Russian art.

The material by Sergey Kuznetsov about exotic cold steel arms is particularly presented in “Collection” section and considered to be unique from the point of view of collectors. In practice there are no private collections devoted to arms of Africa, Tibet or Oceania. That is not the full list of the exotic items that you will find in this issue.

As usually Sergey Vasiliev presents the numismatology section. We offer you the topic about coins of the ancient Russia. Today we will talk about money of Novgorod and Pskov which is a rare subject in domestic numismatics.

People had looked for the visual fixation of time for a long time. The article about phisionotras - precursor of the photography - is a kind of exclusive material. The portraits made in this technique are dated to the end of XVIII - beginning of XIX centuries. This material is in the section “Episodes of history”.

Yuri Gogolitsin continues the series of articles about Russian art of the beginning of XX century. In this issue he covers the Summer Salon that took place in 1921 in Paris and the artistic life of Russian emigration of that period.

Some time ago the auction house Bukowskis put up for sale the water-color portrait of the “unknown girl” by Gau. It was sold under this title. Our experts found out the history of this drawing. There is a one of the Nikolai I daughters on this portrait. The details are in the article of higher senior officer of the Russian Museum Yuri Epatko.
