A renowned auction house Sotheby▓s will hold its first silver sales in Geneva since 1998. An exceptional collection of European silver goes under the hammer on Wednesday, November 16, 2005.
The auction will feature pieces from the Diane collection, with many coming from the hands of renowned Parisian silversmiths such as Edmé-François Balzac, Jean-Baptiste-Claude Odiot, Martin-Guillaume Biennais and Henry Auguste between 1770 and 1820. The items on offer are superb examples of the French neoclassical style and a number were commissioned by important figures such as the Grand Duke Mikhail of Russia, Prince Eugène de Beauharnais, Viceroy of Italy, and Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orléans and later King of France. Other highlights of the sales carry the hallmarks of French or European cities, such as Perpignan (a piece by Jean-Baptiste Navier) and London (items by Louis Laroche, Paul Storr and Paul de Lamerie).
The collection comprises 124 lots and is estimated to total CHF 3-4.5 million (┬2,000,000-3,000,000). Pre-sale exhibitions will be held in Paris, London, Brussels and Geneva before the auction takes place in Geneva.
